Anyone who grew up with frizzy hair probably grew up as an outcast of their social group. Frizz doesn't make anyone look good, and it adds nothing to any style ever invented by the fashion powers that be. It has been the bane of every sufferer's existence and a daily challenge for anyone cursed with bad hair.
There is no magic answer to taming frizz. In the 60s, straightening kits could be purchased at the local drug store but the products contained so much lye that almost everyone who tried using these at home ended up with split ends, hair loss and a head of hair that was so damaged with the rough chemicals that it would have been better to walk around with the frizz.
Professional salons at least had trained stylists to apply these products but the effects were short lived. You might be able to set your hair (blow dryers like we have nowadays hadn't been invented yet) and have it come out straight and shiny, but with the first hint of humidity - you were back to "normal".
Even today, forty years later, scientists haven't quite figured out how to permanently control frizz. Companies have invented all sorts of products, solutions, shampoos, conditioners, oils, and even electrical appliances from curling irons to straightening rods to flat straighteners that can be heated in a car's cigarette lighter, for problems that occur on the run.
Mind you, frizz is a different enemy than naturally curly hair - which few people mind at all. Frizz resembles a Brillo pad, and in a pinch, could probably be used for heavy kitchen chores since it's so hard and course. Even an expensive and time consuming blow dry at a high end salon isn't going to keep your frizz straight and beautiful in a rain shower, or a walk on the beach at night.
A new process referred to as keratinizing has shown some promise, however. Instead of the old theory of using lye and other harsh damaging chemicals to break down the cuticle on the outside of the hair, this process softens the cuticle of the hair to the point that it relaxes all by itself. Keratin is a natural occurring substance already found in hair, nails and skin coloring and is easily handled by the body, and accepted.
The process can be expensive, and is time consuming. However, those who have had tried it do have some very positive feedback. They do admit it's not the perfect solution to cure the frizz. Keratinizing does not straighten hair, nor does it make that promise. What it does promise is that your hair will be soft and manageable enough to style (blow dry, etc.) and the style will last longer than with more conventional methods or products.
For those who can't seem to come up with the $250+ price for this process, you can still rely on hard hold hair spray and gels that literally freeze your hair into position. If all else fails, grow your hair long enough to pull back into a pony tail and drench it with a super holding gel.
