Do you believe parents play the major role in molding their children's character into the adult they become later on in life? If so how? Please share.
Character, yes. Personality and choices, no. I think that so many people believe that if a child goes "wayward" it is the parent's fault. They blame divorce, lack of attention, lack of supervision, lack of morals, whatever in playing a huge role in the issues of said child. I DO NOT believe this to be true. People are born with a personality all their own. They are born with the tendency toward addiction, aggression, antisocial behavior, and attention issues. There is only so much a parent can do to direct their child's personality. And that is where character comes into play. Parents can teach their children morals and responsible behaviors. They can model how to treat others and how to be successful in life. This is the most they can do in forming their child's character. With any luck, the child will ingrain those morals and behaviors and become a respectful, trustworthy adult. However, just because a child doesn't, doesn't mean it's the parent's fault. Sometimes it is, sometimes it is the personality of the child that causes them to go a different direction. The best we can do is lead a child and hope they will follow. Some will, some won't.
